Maggie: A New Career

When Maggie first contacted us she was downright frustrated. So frustrated that she didn't know how to articulate what was bothering her most. Was it her boss? Her personal life? A bad date? She covered a lot of territory in that first meeting, but what it boiled down to was that she was stuck. At a crossroads, low on energy, little career satisfaction. She ruminated how she had let this go on for six years. She wanted to do more with her life - and she wanted more from her life.

After congratulating Maggie on taking an important step forward in managing her career we set to work. Through discussions and customized assessments and exercises we learned that she loved the people side of being an account manager at a large Direct Mail agency. We learned of her excellent communication skills and her winning ability to negotiate, renew and capture new business. We experienced her writing talents and looked forward to her sense of humor during challenging moments. We listened to her speak passionately about a calling she felt that involved helping children. We watched her move forward and we saw her change.

After 3 months of working together Maggie had mapped out a new career path which included making some changes at work and discovering her purpose:
  • Renewed a big account and negotiated a raise based on her strong performance
  • Pursued volunteer work around her interest in advocating children's issues and combined this with her natural writing talent
  • Became a volunteer and writing coach for POSSE Foundation where she helped select inner city students for scholarship programs and evaluated essays written by teenagers from disadvantaged homes
  • Dedicated five hours each week to Girls, Inc. where she created a strong network of individuals in a non-profit setting who became useful sources of career information for her
Best of all, Maggie went from being stuck in old ways of thinking that didn't work anymore to new ways of thinking and living her life.

Unearthing her passions, pursuing her interests and leveraging her talents led her to apply to the prestigious and competitive Masters program in Child Development at Tufts University and she will begin her program in Fall, 2006 - with a scholarship.

Way to go Maggie!
